Downsbrook Primary School, Dominion Road, Worthing, West Sussex, BN14 8GD
Aims of Policy
The aim of this policy is to set out the requirements for a school uniform. Downsbrook Primary School has a school uniform policy, determined by the Senior Leadership Team in consultation with the School Community Council and it is expected that all pupils will comply with it.
At Downsbrook, we believe that school uniform helps to develop the sense of identity, pride, belonging and community. To enable our children to express their own identity, our uniform policy is gender neutral. This means that, whilst we expect all of our children to wear school uniform, the rules for boys and girls are the same and we do not insist that they wear specific items of clothing. From the items detailed below, children are free to choose the uniform they wish to wear.
The school is always willing to support families for whom the provision of uniform might cause financial difficulty. The criteria for this support are in line with that for free school meal assessment.
Letters will be sent home where and when needed to remind parents about our uniform expectations.
Uniform and Faith
The school recognises that there may be adaptations to the basic uniform due to reasons of, for example, faith, which must be discussed and agreed with the Headteacher, parents/ carers and recorded.
For example, for Muslim girls from families for which the wearing of the Hijab, it is important that they are allowed to do so, providing the Hijab is in the approved school colour and size. There may be occasions when such girls are asked to remove the Hijab on health and safety grounds, e.g. – PE/Games lessons, Science experiments, Technology or Food Technology lessons.
Jewellery
In line with the West Sussex County Council policy, the school will only permit stud earrings. Small chains of religious significance may be worn in agreement with the Headteacher. This is to conform to Health and Safety practice. During PE/Games lessons or activities, all earrings, chains and watches will need to be removed, or earrings covered with tape if less than 6 weeks old.
Any exceptions, for medical or faith reasons, must be agreed between the Headteacher and parents or carers and recorded.
Hair
The school requires hair that is collar length, or longer, to be tied up. For Health & Safety reasons, this is particularly important for Science, DT and PE/Games.
Pupils are not allowed to have hair that is coloured, dyed nor to adopt an extreme hair style, including shaving patterns into the hair.
Nail varnish, Make-up and Body art.
Nail varnish, make up and temporary tattoos are not permitted to be worn in school. Children wearing any of these will be asked to remove them.
